First, you’ll visit the unique Garas Quiver Tree Forest, an extraordinary site featuring around 250 quiver trees, which are endemic to Southern Africa. These unusual trees, with their tall, spindly trunks and spiky branches, get their name from the San people, who once used their branches to make quivers for holding arrows. The Quiver Tree Forest is a photographer’s paradise, with its surreal landscape making for some truly remarkable images.

From here, you’ll continue to the nearby Giant’s Playground, a striking geological formation made up of massive dolerite boulders that appear to be placed in intricate arrangements, creating a surreal labyrinth. These natural rock formations, formed millions of years ago, make for a great stop to stretch your legs and take in the unique surroundings.

DAY THREE Arrival at Luderitz
Luderitz Nest Hotel

After breakfast, set out for one of Namibia’s most iconic landmarks – the Fish River Canyon. Known as the second largest canyon in the world, this awe-inspiring geological formation stretches over 160 kilometres in length and up to 27 kilometres in width. The canyon’s sheer scale and dramatic cliffs create a stunning panorama that’s both humbling and beautiful. Spend time exploring the viewpoints and learning about the canyon’s fascinating geological history, making this a highlight of your Namibian adventure.

Later in the day, continue your journey to the coastal town of Lüderitz, a picturesque settlement nestled along the Atlantic coast. On the way, pass through Gaub, home to the famous wild horses of the Namib. These hardy horses have adapted to survive in the harsh desert environment, and their mysterious presence adds an intriguing layer to the journey.

DAY FOUR Day Trip to Kolmanskop

On Day 4, embark on a journey to one of Namibia’s most eerie and fascinating sites: Kolmanskop, a ghost town in the heart of the desert. Once a thriving diamond mining town in the early 20th century, Kolmanskop now stands as a haunting monument to a bygone era of opulence and luxury. Visitors can explore the well-preserved buildings, which once housed the wealthy miners and their families. The decadence of the town, complete with grand interiors and intricate details, is a stark contrast to the surrounding barren desert landscape, making it a truly unique place for photographs and reflection. The town’s eerie stillness and historical significance add an unforgettable touch to your tour.

Before returning to Lüderitz, take the opportunity to visit the replica of the stone-carved cross originally planted in 1488 by Bartolomeu Dias on his homeward journey to Portugal. This historic landmark serves as a tribute to Namibia’s early European exploration and maritime history, standing as a reminder of the country’s long and intricate past. Set against the rugged coastline, the site offers breathtaking ocean views and a chance to contemplate the adventurous spirit of early explorers who braved uncharted waters.

After exploring this captivating piece of history, return to Lüderitz for the night. Take some time to unwind, savour the coastal atmosphere, and reflect on the fascinating experiences of the day.

Wildlife in the Khomas Region

Giraffe

The giraffe, a towering icon of the African savannah, is known for its patterned coat and long neck, perfect for browsing treetop leaves. Found in grasslands and woodlands, its graceful stride and social behaviour make it a captivating symbol of the wild.

Leopard

The leopard, a stealthy predator of Africa’s bushveld and forests, is renowned for its rosette-patterned coat and unmatched climbing skills. Solitary by nature, it hunts with precision, stalking prey silently before a swift ambush.

Meerkat

The meerkat, a small and social mammal of the Kalahari and Namib deserts, is known for its upright stance and watchful nature. Living in close-knit colonies, meerkats forage for insects and roots while sentinels stand guard.

Brown Hyena

The brown hyena, a resourceful predator of the Kalahari and Namib deserts, scavenges carcasses, hunts small prey, and feeds on desert melons or seal pups along Namibia’s coast. Smaller than the spotted hyena, it’s recognised by its pointed ears and shaggy brown coat, which it raises to intimidate rivals.

Cheetah

The cheetah, a swift predator of Namibia’s savannas, is built for speed, reaching over 100 km/h to hunt antelope like springbok and impala. Slim and longlegged, it stands out with round spots and black tear lines under its eyes.

Spotted Hyena

Spotted hyenas in Namibia are skilled hunters, often taking down large prey like zebras. Their powerful jaws can crush bones with ease, giving them one of the strongest bite forces of any mammal. This ability helps them extract nutrients and clean up the ecosystem by efficiently disposing of carcasses.

Pangolin

The pangolin, a shy and nocturnal creature, is covered in protective keratin scales and found in South Africa’s savannahs and woodlands. Feeding on ants and termites with its long, sticky tongue, it plays a vital role in pest control.

Wildebeest

The blue wildebeest, a common sight on Namibia’s grasslands, is a large antelope with a front-heavy build, dark grey coat, and curved horns. Grazing alongside zebras, it thrives on short grass. During the rainy season, females calve simultaneously, overwhelming predators like lions and hyenas

Zebra

The plains zebra, common in Namibia, is known for its striking stripe pattern, thought to aid in camouflage, insect deterrence, or predator confusion. Sociable by nature, zebras live in harems led by dominant stallions and often form larger herds with wildebeest.

Oryx

The oryx, a striking antelope of arid regions like the Kalahari, is recognised by its long, straight horns and bold black-and-white facial markings. Adapted to desert life, it can survive on sparse vegetation and minimal water.

Aardvark

The aardvark, a nocturnal forager of Namibia’s open landscapes, is known for its pig-like body, kangaroo tail, long ears, and anteater snout. It uses strong claws to break into termite mounds, licking up insects with its sticky tongue. A solitary burrow-dweller, females give birth to a single cub underground.

Baboon

Baboons, highly social primates found in savannahs and mountains, are known for their intelligence and adaptability. Living in large troops, they forage for fruits, seeds, and small prey.

DAY SIX Stay at Namib Desert
Stofpad Lodge

On Day 6, wake up early to enter the stunning Namib-Naukluft Park at sunrise. As the first rays of sunlight touch the desert, they paint the landscape in a vibrant array of colours against the backdrop of a clear blue sky. This magical moment offers an excellent opportunity for photography, capturing the desert’s beauty at its most serene.

Your journey continues to the iconic Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei, one of the most surreal and photographed spots in Namibia. Surrounded by the tallest dunes on Earth, the contrast between the red dunes, the white clay pan, and the dark, ancient camel thorn trees creates an otherworldly scene. You will also visit Sossusvlei, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the Tsauchab River ends abruptly, forming a vast expanse of towering red dunes—the highest in the world. When the river flows, it feeds into Dead Vlei, but in the dry season, the pan becomes a striking white, contrasting dramatically with the surrounding dunes. Together, these elements create the breathtaking landscape known as Sossusvlei. Climbing one of these dunes offers an unforgettable experience and panoramic views of this dramatic desert terrain.

After a thrilling morning exploring the desert, enjoy a picnic lunch at Sesriem Canyon, a picturesque natural canyon carved by the Tsauchab River. Following lunch, stop at Solitaire, a charming little town known for its desert bakery and tranquil surroundings, offering a unique glimpse into life in the desert.

These elegant birds flock to the lagoon to feed, providing a magnificent sight against the backdrop of the bay’s calm waters and vast, open skies.
